The Beauty of Unity!
Psalm 133 (ESV)
“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”
When Herman Edwards coach of the Kansas City Chiefs was asked by reporters about his philosophy regarding teamwork, he said,”The player’s who play for this football team will play for the name on the side of the helmet and not for the name on the back of the jersey.”
Herman Edwards knew that if his team would be successful on the field and position themselves to win the Super Bowl, his players had to play for the team and not for themselves!
Unity of purpose is the key to any organizations success. Unity is the ability to rally together around a common goal, purpose or cause despite differences. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says,“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.” Unity can be a beautiful thing when people or groups purpose in their hearts to work together!
Psalm 133 echoes the beauty and blessing of God’s children living together in unity. The Psalmist in Psalm 133 describes the beauty of unity as ‘good’ and ‘pleasant’. The Hebrew word for ‘good’ means excellent, agreeable or beneficial. In other words, God views living together in unity as good, excellent or beneficial. Now the Hebrew word for ‘pleasant’ means beautiful, sweet or lovely. In other words, God views living together in unity as beautiful, sweet or lovely. If this is God’s description and view of unity, then it ought to be His children’s view and sentiments of unity as well!
Christian unity should also be viewed as beautiful because it’s source is God himself. This is the meaning of the phrase ‘running down’ from the head and beard of Aaron. How do you view or value unity? Are you playing for your team or your self? Remember there’s beauty in unity!
God help me to see the beauty of living together in unity with other believers and being a team player, Amen!
